Comets girls tennis team edged by GW

Baylee Snead won at number four singles and Snead and Dria Brandon teamed up for a win at number two doubles, but the Halifax County High School girl’s tennis team lost a close 5-4 decision to GW in Danville on Monday.

The Comets won a singles and doubles match by default, but it still wasn’t enough against the Eagles in a match for third place in the district, according to Comets’ Head Coach Greg Donner.

“The Eagles showed up a man short but with strong players at the top spots and were able to win four singles matches, leaving the Comets needing a sweep of doubles to get the win,” said Donner.

It all came down to the number one doubles team of Monica Puckett and Shania DeJarnette, according to Donner, who came very close to upsetting the favored GW team of Sabina Bradford and Lindsay Harris.

“After dropping the first set, the Comets fought back to lead for much of the second set. The Halifax pair forced many deuces in every game before falling 6-4 in the final set,” Donner pointed out.

“It was the best match we have had this season, and we were in it all the way. When it was tied at four games apiece, I thought we could pull it off and even when they got the lead we did not stop challenging them.”

Snead scored a win at number four singles with a win over Kayla Lewis, and the first-year player is improving quickly as the season progresses, Donner said.

“Also playing well were Dria Brandon and Lexi Reaves at number three and five singles. Brandon pushed her opponent to a tie-break before falling in the second set,” he noted.

“Reaves played her opponent close with many deuce games in the longest match of the day but could not manage to get the key points needed for a win.

“Brandon and Snead joined forces at the number two doubles for a decisive win to force the deciding effort on the top doubles team,” Donner added.

“I’m confident that the Comets can pull off the win next time they meet the Eagles,” he said.
