Gold Cup races head to VIR this weekend

Race fans and participants will take a step back in time this weekend as VIRginia International Raceway will pay tribute to the great drivers and cars of yesteryear with the annual Heacock Classic Gold Cup Historic Races & Car Show.

A long-standing event at VIR, the Gold Cup Historic Races, set for Friday through Sunday, fans will see a wide variety of historic cars speeding around the fabled 17-turn VIR layout in exciting competition.

Fifty-five years have passed since the first race was held at VIRginia International Raceway. This year’s Heacock Classic Gold Cup Historic Races & Car Show will pay tribute to the great cars and drivers that were present at VIR on the historic weekend of August 3-4, 1957 when the track first opened its doors.

The car show will take place on Saturday, and is included in the cost of a Saturday or Three-Day ticket.

Car Show registration will be at the Gallery on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., with the car show running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Two trophies will be awarded, one for Peoples’ Choice and one for Sponsors’ Choice.

Touring laps for car show participants will be held on the Patriot Course on Saturday afternoon.
