ROCKY MOUNT — Franklin County High School used its stifling pressure defense to perfection and easily dispatched Halifax County High School here Monday night in the opening round of the Piedmont District Girls Basketball Tournament.
Unable to mount any sort of offense against Franklin County High School's pressure defense, the Comets fell to the Eagles 73-19.
"When they (Franklin County) got up they started pressing we turned the ball over and turned the ball over and couldn't get off a shot," explained Comets Head Coach Wayne Murray.
"They put the press on us. We knew that was what they were going to do. Tonight is not how we play basketball."
The Comets failed to score in the first quarter and trailed 23-0 heading into the second period. Halifax County High School trailed 27-0 when Lakia Martin scored the team's first points with a basket with 6:32 left in the first half.
Franklin County High School maintained its huge advantage the rest of the quarter and led 42-7 at halftime.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Comets trailed 55-7. Martin got the first of two straight Comets baskets to start the fourth quarter that allowed the Comets to close the gap to 44 points at 55-11.
But, the turnover-plagued Comets could do little more and fell to the Eagles 73-19.
Martin led the Comets in scoring with eight points and Janiyah Logan followed with five points.
