With the Christmas holiday break now behind them, the Halifax County High School boys and girls basketball teams are geared up to return to regular-season play.
The Comets will resume regular-season play tonight, with the Comets girls teams facing Bassett High School here at Halifax County High School. Junior varsity action starts at 6 p.m., with the varsity contest set for a 7:30 p.m.
Halifax County High School’s boys basketball teams will hit the road tonight, traveling to Bassett to face Bassett High School. As is the case with the girls, the boys junior varsity game is set for 6 p.m., with the varsity contest set for a 7 p.m. start.
Both the Comets varsity boys and varsity girls teams enter tonight’s Piedmont District contests coming off of championship wins in last weekend’s Gazette-Virginian Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament at Halifax County High School.
Larry Epperly, the head coach of the Comets varsity boys basketball team, says his team is in a good place right now.
“I’m happy with the way we’re playing,” Epperly said after his team won the Gazette-Virginian Holiday Classic.
“It was a great team effort, the defense was a team effort, the offense was a team effort. The guys are happy, but they understand this (winning the holiday tournament) is just a step along the way. There are some other things we want to get done.”
Tonight’s Piedmont District games against Bassett High School will serve as a prelude to what will be a busy upcoming week for the Comets boys team.
This coming Tuesday, the Comets boys will travel to Danville to face arch-rival GW in a Piedmont District contest and will hit the road again on Wednesday night to travel to Lynchburg to face Heritage High School. Next Friday night, the Comets will host Patrick County in another Piedmont District game.
The Comets girls teams have only two games on tap next week, with the Lady Comets hosting GW Tuesday night and traveling to Stuart to face Patrick County High School on Friday night.
