Two tourney records broken in Holiday Classic

The Gazette-Virginian Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament finished a successful run Saturday at Halifax County High School, with familiar foes playing in both the boys and girls championship games.

For the 13th time in the past 15 years, Halifax County and Person High School (N.C.) played for the championship, with Halifax County coming out on top with one of the more lopsided margins in the competitive rivalry, 69-47, marking the ninth championship in the holiday tournament’s 20-year history for the Comets.

This year marked the 11th year for the girl’s tournament, with Halifax County holding off Person High School 39-34 for its fifth tournament title.

In Friday’s semifinal games in the girl’s tournament, Person High defeated Park View High School of South Hill 50-35, and Halifax County defeated Gretna High School 49-37.

In the boy’s tournament, Person High defeated Park View 64-59, and Halifax County defeated Gretna 77-33.

Saturday’s consolation round saw Gretna defeat Park View 50-43 in the girl’s tournament and Park View defeat Gretna 56-32 in the boy’s tournament.

At least two tournament records were broken during the holiday classic, with the Comets varsity boys basketball team breaking its own tourney record of 10 3-point baskets in a game set in 2003, hitting 11 treys in the championship game win.

The Comets also broke its own record for 3-point baskets in the tournament, finishing with 19 in two games.

The previous record, set in 2003, was 15.
