Golfers third in district tourney

For the Halifax County High School golf team, Monday’s Piedmont District Championship Golf Tournament at Westlake Golf & Country Club in Hardy was a repeat of an often-read story – the lack of a solid fourth score to count toward the team total.

The Comets finished third behind winner Franklin County High School and runner-up Tunstall High School, the two teams that have dominated Piedmont District play this season.

With a team total of 320, the Comets missed first place by five shots and missed second place by three shots, not a bad showing at all.

Comets golfers Peter Gasperini and Josh Irby both finished with a 1-over-par round of 73 and finished in a three-way tie for medalist honors with Franklin County High School golfer Landon Prillaman. Both Gasperini and Irby were named to the All-Piedmont District Golf Team.

Joey Gasperini came in with a round of 82 for the Comets’ third counting score. But, the next lowest score the Comets could count was a round of 92 from freshman Jamey Binner.

A fourth score of 88 or less would have put the Comets no worse than being in the runner-up spot.

“It’s not because of a lack of trying hard,” Comets Head Coach David Graham pointed out about the lack of a solid fourth score in Monday’s tournament.

“I’m very pleased overall. I just wanted the team to have a good solid round today and that’s what we got. The 320 is a good score. We played a good solid round as a team, which helps going into Thursday’s Conference Tournament.”

Monday’s Piedmont District Tournament had no impact on the Comets as far as post-season play is concerned. The Comets will go to Hanover Country Club Thursday where they will compete in the VHSL Division 5 Conference 16 Tournament.

There, they will face Albemarle High School, tournament host Patrick Henry High School of Ashland and Orange High School, with the top two teams from that tournament advancing to next week’s 5A North Region Championship Tournament.

Franklin County High School’s win over Tunstall High School in Monday’s Piedmont District Tournament gives it five district championship wins in a row, counting tournament wins in the now-defunct Western Valley District in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

The Eagles’ win over Tunstall High School came one week after they had lost to the Trojans by four strokes (308-312) at The Westlake Golf and Country Club, which is Franklin County High School’s home course.

Halifax County High School and Franklin County High School did not play each other during the regular season.
