It wasn’t the best of days for the Halifax County High School girls cross country team in Wednesday’s four-team Piedmont District meet at Edmunds Park.
With a sweep of the top four spots and taking five of the top seven finishing positions, Bassett High School handily won the meet, edging Halifax County High School 17-40. Tunstall High School finished a distant third with 89 points. Martinsville High School, which had less than the required five minimum runners, posted no score.
Wednesday’s meet marked the first loss for Halifax County High School in Piedmont District competition this season. The Comets had won all four of their previous Piedmont District meets.
And, Wednesday’s meet, the last of the Comets’ two home meets for the season, marked the first time Halifax County High School had competed against Bassett High School this season.
“We’re disappointed,” remarked Comets Coach Brady Taylor.
“We (Taylor and assistant coach David Riddle) not happy, but we’re not mad at the girls. Obviously there is a little bit of disappointment in the results. I believe it’s going to be a good motivator.”
Aide Gonzalez led Bassett High School to a sweep of the top four spots, edging teammate Emily Sigmon by 38 seconds at the finish.
Gonzalez toured the 3.1-mile Edmunds Park course in a time of 22 minutes and 55 seconds, a time good enough to notch her third race win of the season.
“It was a really good run,” Gonzalez remarked.
“It (22:55) was a good time. It (the course) was challenging because of the hills, but it is a good course.”
Gonzalez broke into the lead early and was never seriously challenged after the first half of the race.
“I like to go fast,” Gonzalez pointed out.
“My teammates were behind me. They all did really well.”
Emma Worsley finished fifth in the race and was the top finisher for the Comets with her time of 23:47. She was 52 seconds behind winner Gonzalez.
“With the weather, it was a perfect day,” Worsley remarked.
“I think that played a part in everyone’s race today.”
Worsley tried to keep pace with the Bassett High School runners after being passed in the early stages of the race.
“I decided to try to keep up with them the entire time because I like to keep my target in sight,” Worsley explained.
“When they passed me, I knew that wasn’t going to be it, that I had to stay with them and try to sprint it out at the end.”
Worsley gained some ground on the Bassett High School foursome late in the race.
“The big hill in mile three is the breaking point for a lot of other teams because they don’t expect it at the end,” Worsley pointed out.
“It’s a long continuous hill. It’s not that steep, but it goes on for awhile, and it definitely tires those girls out, which allowed me to get closer to them.”
Taylor said the outcome of his team’s first four Piedmont District meets were somewhat skewed because his team had not competed against Bassett High School until this meet.”
“We thought the girls had a good chance at winning the meet today,” Taylor said.
“Maybe today will be the thing that gives us the motivation to start working a little harder and get over the hump. This is the first Piedmont District race we’ve lost, and hopefully they don’t like that feeling and will get back on the winning track next week.”
