Golfer earns medalist honors

Halifax County High School golfer Josh Irby earned medalist honors and the Comets golf team inched closer to Tunstall High School in Monday’s Piedmont District match at Danville Country Club.

Still, the Comets came up short.

Tunstall High School continued its stronghold on the Piedmont District Monday, putting together a 302 total to edge the Comets by five shots. Halifax County High School posted a 307 total, its best round of the season, and GW of Danville rounded out the field with a 400 total.

The Comets got an outstanding round from Irby, who carded an even-par 70 to earn top individual honors. Peter Gasperini came in with a round of 72 and Joey Gasperini posted a round of 79 to give the Comets three rounds in the 70’s. Anna Carole Cole’s round of 86 also counted towards the Comets’ team score.

Freshman Jamey Binner’s round of 88 and Alex Tepper’s round of 90 did not count toward the Comets’ team total.

Tunstall High School had a round of 71 from Eric Squier and a round of 73 from Rand Gibson. Andrew Moon carded a round of 78 and Katy Pritchett came in with a round of 80.

Christian Blankenship’s round of 93 was GW’s best score. Owen O’Hare and John Henry Moore both posted a round of 99 and Eli O’Donnell came in with a round of 109.

Halifax County High School’s next Piedmont District match will be Wednesday, Aug. 28 when the Comets host Tunstall High School, Martinsville High School and Bassett High School at Green’s Folly Golf Course. Tee time is 2 p.m.
