Comets diamonders face busy weekend

The Halifax County High School varsity baseball team is facing a busy two-game weekend that begins this afternoon with a 5 p.m. home game against Magna Vista High School.

Today’s game will be the final regular-season home game for the Comets.

On Saturday, the Comets will travel to nearby Dan Daniel Park to face arch-rival GW in their final regular-season Western Valley District contest. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

The Comets (10-6 overall, 5-2 district) are battling for second place in the Western Valley District standings and a home game in the first round of the Western Valley District Tournament, which begins Wednesday.

A win by the Comets over GW will give the Comets second place in the district standings. However, a loss to GW, coupled with Franklin County High School wins over Patrick Henry High School last night and William Fleming High School today, will create a for second place between the Comets and Franklin County High School.

Franklin County High School has three district losses entering its final two games.

If there is a tie for second place, the tie will be broken based upon Virginia Lottery numbers.

The Comets junior varsity team will conclude its season this weekend with a pair of road games against Magna Vista High School and GW.

Saturday’s junior varsity game against GW in Danville will be played at 1 p.m. at Market Garden Field.
