After having won its first three games of the season, the Halifax County High School varsity baseball team took its first loss Wednesday night, falling to Leesville Road High School 9-2 in Raleigh, N.C.
Wednesday night’s loss dropped the Comets’ record to 3-1 on the season.
Errors and miscues plagued the Comets’ effort. Halifax County High School committed five errors in the game, and all but two of Leesville Road High School’s runs were unearned runs.
The two teams were pretty comparable in terms of hits, with the Comets getting six hits as compared with eight for the hosts. Tyler Stephens led the Comets with a 3-3 effort at the plate that included three singles. Ryan Yates, Will Harris and Rufus Jeffress each had one hit.
A solo homer by Yates with one out in the top of the first inning put the Comets on top 1-0. After the Comets stranded two runners on the bases in the top of the second inning, Leesville Road High School tagged the Comets for three runs to take a 3-1 lead it never relinquished.
Comets hurler Thomas Cole hit the first two Leesville Road HS batters he faced in the inning. He rallied to strike out the next batter, but the fourth batter of the inning, Leesville’s leadoff batter in the lineup, reached base on an error in the outfield, allowing two runs to score. Another Comets error and a base hit gave Leesville its third run for the 3-1 lead.
Halifax County High School got Nick Anderson on the bases with a walk with one out in the top of the third inning. Anderson moved to second base on a passed ball and later scored on an error to close the gap to a run at 3-2.
Leesville extended its lead with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Two walks and two hits produced a run for Leesville. A two-RBI double later in the inning allowed Leesville to chalk up two more runs and a 7-2 lead.
A run in the fifth inning and a run that scored on a Comets error in the sixth inning produced the final 9-2 tally for Leesville.
The Comets used three pitchers in the game, with Cole striking out three batters and allowing three hits, three walks and seven runs, with six of the runs being unearned runs.
Ryan Powell relieved Cole with one out in the third inning and pitched 2.2 innings. He fanned one batter and allowed three hits and one run. Chase Wilkerson pitched the final inning of the game, striking out one batter and allowing one hit and one run.
The Comets will be back on the road again tonight to face Amherst County High School in a 7 p.m. game. Halifax County High School’s junior varsity team will face the Amherst County High School jayvees at 4:30 p.m.
