Errors, JF overcome Comets

ROCKY MOUNT — The Halifax County High School softball team's bid for a third straight title in the Battle of the Bases Softball Tournament hosted by Franklin County High School took a big hit Friday afternoon with an 11-1 loss to Jefferson Forest High School in six innings.
Jefferson Forest High School took advantage of a walk, three Comets errors and a trio of back-to-back hits to plate six runs in the first inning and jump to a quick 6-0 lead.
A lead-off walk led to another run for Jefferson Forest in the third inning and a 7-0 lead.
Halifax County High School picked up its only run of the game in the fourth inning when Miyanna Ross reached base on an error, Meg Bane followed with a single and Megan Puckett followed with a run-scoring double.
Jefferson Forest High School answered with a run in the fifth inning to go up 8-1, and added three more runs in the sixth inning to seal the win.
The Comets had six hits in the game, with Bane leading the way with a 3-3 effort that included three singles. Puckett was 2-3 at the plate with a double and a single and Ross had one hit, a single in the fifth inning.
Halifax County struggled defensively, committing seven errors in the game, three errors in both the first and fifth innings and one in the sixth inning.
