ROCKY MOUNT — A two-RBI single from junior Megan Puckett in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Halifax County High School a come-from behind 5-4 win over C.D. Hylton Friday in the opening game of the Battle of the Bases Softball Tournament hosted by Franklin County High School.
The Comets trailed 4-3 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, but got a lead-off hit from Meg Bane to start the inning. Comets relief pitcher Taylor Barnes walked, bringing Puckett to the plate.
Bane and Barnes advanced on a double steal and Puckett followed with a hit to the outfield that allowed Bane and Barnes to score.
The game-winning hit gave Puckett two hits and two RBIs in the contest. Bane had a home run and a base hit in the game and also had two RBIs.
Bane's homer was a two-run shot in the bottom of the first inning that allowed the Comets to break a 1-1 deadlock and take a 3-1 lead.
Tayler Mosley opened the game for the Comets with single and scored on a double from Emily Nester to tie the game at 1-1. Bane's homer came with one out and scored Nester.
A two-run homer by C.D. Hylton's Jessica Huber in the top of the third inning tied the game at 3-3. The Bulldogs added another run in the fourth inning to take the lead at 4-3.
The Comets had two big scoring opportunities get away from them. Halifax County had the bases loaded with nobody out in the bottom of the second inning and had the bases loaded again in the bottom of the fifth inning, but couldn't push across a run on either occasion.
Halifax County had nine hits in the contest. C.D. Hylton High School had eight hits.
