With cuts made, baseball, softball teams move forward

With one of the hardest tasks, making cuts, now behind them coaches of Halifax County High School’s baseball and softball coaches are hard at work this week getting their teams ready for pre-season scrimmages.

Halifax County High School Head Varsity Baseball Coach Kelvin Davis kept 17 of the 22 players that tried out for spots on the varsity roster and has a good group of returning players in the fold.

Ten players from last season’s Comets team that played its way into the Northwest Region Tournament return this season. That group includes seniors Avery Anderson, Nick Anderson, Patrick Barton, Tyler Dunn, Seth Elliott and Andrew Hamlett. Also returning are seniors Rufus Jeffress and Ryan Yates and juniors Will Harris and Tristan Howerton.

Davis also has six players that are moving up from last season’s junior varsity team including sophomore Thomas Cole and juniors Eddie Chaney, Dustin Crews, Ryan Powell, Tyler Stephens and Chase Wilkerson.

There is also one newcomer, Josh Irby.

“I think we have a good group,” Davis pointed out.

“We told them we’re going to push them and get the best out of them. We also told them that a lot depends upon them, that they must be dedicated to the program – that they’re going to have to do their part.”

The Comets have one scrimmage game scheduled, that being a road game on Saturday, March 9 against Northside High School in Roanoke.

Comets Varsity Softball Head Coach Melanie Saunders and Assistant Coach Jennifer Rutledge have a 14-player roster this season.

Saunders has six returning seniors on board this season including Meg Bane, Cori Campbell, Courtney Epps, Miyana Ross, Tayler Mosley and Emily Nester.

A big item of note is that Saunders has eight players who are new to the varsity roster. That group includes juniors Hannah Saunders, Beth Thomas, Sam Moser, Megan Puckett and Peyton Myers and sophomore Ashley Watts.

Two ninth-graders, Taylor Barnes and Cecilie Elliott round out the roster.

The Comets varsity softball has two scrimmage games on its schedule, the first being a road game Saturday against Atlee High School in Mechanicsville. The Comets will scrimmage Dan River High School here next Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Comets Junior Varsity Softball Head Coach Jasmine Parker and Assistant Coach Reagan Cannon have a 13-player roster this season.

Parker has four sophomore returnees on the roster including Gabrielle Spainhour, Tatianna Roberson, Kye-Neisha Logan and Lauren Spencer.

Ninth-graders Kirsten Doss and Terri Murray made the team, as did a group of seven eighth-graders, including Lauren Chaney, Abbey Bales, Katie Gregory, Sidney McLamb, Megan Watts, Faith Lester and Kennedy Dyer.

Comets Junior Varsity Baseball Head Coach Robert Carter has a 13-player roster this season, a roster that includes five players that return from last year’s jayvee team.

The group of returning players includes sophomores Tripp Bennett, Dustin Fears, Colby Grissom, Kory Lennon and Ben Major.

Also on the team this season are sophomores Josh Brown and Trip Womack and freshmen Tanner Bennett, Kelonte Gutrich, Jake Hughes, Jacob McKinney, Adam Throckmorton and Arthur Joe Watts.
