Grapplers defeated in home opener

Halifax County High School Wrestling Coach Brady Taylor wasn’t totally pleased with his team’s losses to Nottoway High School and Person (N.C.) High School here in Wednesday’s season-opening contests.

But, Taylor wasn’t overly disappointed either.

The Comets spotted Nottoway 12 points as a result of having two vacant weight classes, rallied with three back-to-back wins in the middle-weight classes to take the lead, only to end up losing 51-36 with a forfeit and a pair of pinfall losses in the three upper weight classes.

“Obviously, we would have liked to have started the season with two wins rather than two losses,” Taylor pointed out.

“We were really in the
Nottoway match and had a chance to win. If a couple of matches go differently and we give up one or two less pins, we come out on top. Things could have gone a little differently, but they didn’t.”

The Comets struggled against an experienced Person (N.C.) High School that was returning seven starters from last year’s outstanding team including a pair of state qualifiers, falling to the Rockets 60-18.

Halifax County High School had only three wins in that contest, one of them by forfeit.

“That’s one of the strongest Person High School teams I’ve seen in the last couple or three years,” Taylor pointed out.

“Person High School is a very well-coached team and a very experienced team.”

Junior James Anderson (160) and senior Tommie Hairston (170) won both of their matches in Wednesday night’s opener.

Spencer Conner (132), Ethan Collie (138), Gannon Griffin (152) and Ezra Walker (220) each picked up one win.

“James Anderson and Tommy Hairston had a good night,” Taylor remarked.

“Those two are going to be two of the rocks in our lineup. James and Tommy, along with Gannon and Ethan are the core of our lineup. If we can pick up a win or two along the way with Ezra, Spencer and some of the others, we will be fine.”

Taylor said he was particularly impressed with the efforts of first-year wrestlers Conner and Logan Blake (285).

“I was really impressed with Spencer Conner and Logan Blake as first-year wrestlers going out there with the aggression they showed and making some good decisions,” Taylor said.

“Logan lost both of his matches, but he’s going to get better as the season goes on. Spencer has a real good chance to turn into one of our bright spots. He was (wrestling) up one, if not two weight classes from where he will end up later in the season.”

Taylor said several Comets wrestlers were competing in a higher weight class than what he expects them to be at past mid-season.

“It is what it is,” he remarked.

“You’ve got to wrestle who they (the opposing team) puts out on the mat and go at it.”

Taylor said both matches were good tests for his team.

“We wanted to win,” he said “and we expected to win. This is not the end of the world. We saw some bright spots, some good things, and we’ve got a lot of work to do.

“This was a big test for many of the guys,” added Taylor.

“For so many of them, this was the first time they were ever in a jam on a mat by themselves, fans screaming and all of that. None of them folded. They all stood up and were aggressive. We’ll take it.”
