Blue Comets cagers have 22-game slate

The Halifax County High School varsity boys basketball team will play a 22-game schedule this season, with the schedule closely mirroring the schedule of the past couple of seasons.

Halifax County High School will open its season at home on Tuesday, Nov. 27 against E.C. Glass High School of Lynchburg, kicking off a series of non-district contests that will take the Comets through late December.

The Comets’ list of non-district regular-season opponents includes E.C. Glass High School and Heritage High School, both of Lynchburg, neighboring border rival Person (N.C.) High School and Piedmont District schools Martinsville High School, Magna Vista High School and Bassett High School.

Halifax County High School will again face GW, Franklin County High School, Patrick Henry High School of Roanoke and William Fleming High School of Roanoke in Western Valley District play.

As has been the case in the past, only the top four teams will make it into the field for the Western Valley District Tournament, which is set to open on Feb. 8.

The annual Halifax County High School Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament, featuring two nights of action for the Comets boys and girls teams, will be played Thursday, Dec. 27 and Friday, Dec. 28.

This season is the final season of Western Valley District basketball. Earlier this fall the Virginia High School League adopted a new six-classification system and created “neighborhood districts” composed of teams of multiple classifications in an effort to ease travel situations.

Halifax County High School will be shifted into the Piedmont District starting in the fall of 2013. Next year the Piedmont District will include Halifax County High School, GW, Tunstall High School, Martinsville High School, Magna Vista High School, Bassett High School, Patrick County High School and Franklin County High School.

The Comets, this season, will be facing all of the teams that will be in the Piedmont District next season except for Tunstall High School and Patrick County High School.
