Comets girls cagers wasting no time

First-year Halifax County High School Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach Billy Lucas isn’t wasting any time when it comes to beginning preparation for the start of the new season.

Lucas greeted 14 players at Monday’s opening session of tryouts and practice, and he is looking at having the roster of players for this season’s Comets team completed by today, Thursday at the latest.

Eight of the 14 players on hand for Monday’s opening session were players from last year’s Comets team that finished with a 6-16 slate that included an 0-8 record in Western Valley District play.

The group includes Lexi Tucker, Janiyah Logan, Danyelle Edmonds, Aleara Edmondson, Che’Lese Bowman, Sheraine Claughton, Briyana Jackson and Ashley Hill. Edmonds, Edmondson, Bowman, Claughton and Jackson are seniors.

Lucas said that in an overall sense, Monday’s opening day of tryouts went well.

“It was your typical opening day of tryouts,” Lucas pointed out.

“The girls worked real hard. We put them through a variety of drills to see what they could do, see how they were in terms of fundamentals. We also let them play a little bit.”

The first-year Comets head coach said the players gave a good effort.

“I was glad to see them out here working hard,” Lucas remarked.

“For the most part, the girls performed well in their drills and did a real good job.”

Lucas said the performance of the girls was something of a mixed bag, depending upon what drill was being run.

“In some of the drills, some of the girls performed better than what I expected,” said Lucas.

“In some others, they performed right where I thought they would. It was a mixture. I was real pleased with it.”

Lucas said his plan was to work with all of the girls yesterday, confer with his coaching staff last night and set the team roster Wednesday.

“That gives us two days of tryouts,” he noted.

“Hopefully, by Wednesday, certainly by Thursday, we will know for sure who will be on the team.”

The Halifax County High School varsity and junior varsity girls basketball teams will open their season on Monday, Nov. 26, when they host E.C. Glass High School at Comets gym.

The junior varsity game will start at 6 p.m. and the varsity contest will follow at 7:30 p.m.
