All the Halifax County High School varsity volleyball team needed Wednesday night was a win against Franklin County in the semifinals of the Western Valley District Tournament to lock up a home match in the first round of the Northwest Region Tournament.
But, the Comets, who defeated the Eagles 3-0 and 3-1 in the regular season, had the tables turned on them in a big way with Franklin County taking a 3-1 win in a match played at Patrick Henry High School.
The Eagles won game one 25-12, and the Comets rallied to a 25-17 win in game two before the Eagles clinched the match in two straight games, 25-18, 25-19.
Halifax County hosted GW High School Thursday, with the Comets needing a win to advance to the Northwest Region Tournament as a No. 3 seed out of the district and facing a road trip to either Forest Park High School or Woodbridge High School on Saturday.
Franklin County High School, courtesy of its win in the semifinals, will host the loser of the Forest Park-Woodbridge match as the No. 2 seed out of the Western Valley District.
