Comets drop match to Patrick Henry

It was a case of so close, but yet so far for the Halifax County High School varsity volleyball team in its match at home Tuesday against Patrick Henry High School, with the Comets falling to 1-1 in the Western Valley District with a 3-0 loss to the Patriots.

Patrick Henry overcame a strong start by the Comets in game one to take a 25-11 win, but Halifax County rebounded with a strong game-two performance, rallying from an 18-13 deficit to game point at 25-24 before dropping a 27-25 decision.

The Comets led 4-3 early in game three and were within three points at 10-7 later on, but the Patriots pulled away to a 25-15 win to clinch the match.

Kendall Lloyd led the Comets with 10 kills and 20 attacks to lead the Comets, while Meg Bane finished with 11 good serves, 61 good sets and two service aces, all team highs.

Kelsy Williams finished with 30 good passes and six service points to lead Halifax, while Whitney White had four blocks.

Still, it wasn’t enough against a Patrick Henry team that got 16 kills from Sarah Miller and 30 assists and four kills from Caroline Brailsford.

The result possibly could have been different had the Comets taken game two and been more consistent and focused as a team, according to Comets Head Coach Tiffaney White.

“For some reason we lacked aggression, and we let a lot of balls drop which we never do,” explained White.

“We’re not quite coming together as a team, we have some players having good games and other players having good games but never together as a team.

“I told them with a team like that there’s no room for error, and we can definitely beat that team.”

Missed opportunities behind the service line prevented the Comets from gaining momentum during the match, particularly in game two, White noted.

Halifax County had 15 service errors in the match, five alone in game two, and the Comets lost game two by only two points, White pointed out.

“We had some execution errors,” White added.
