Alonzo Bennett has played in only one of Halifax County High School’s two regular-season football games, but he sits at the top of multiple team statistics categories.
Bennett, who missed last Friday’s game against E.C. Glass as the result of an injury he sustained during the Comets’ season-opener against Jefferson Forest, has a 20.83 yards per carry average.
The Comets’ running back has 125 yards on six carries and two touchdowns. He also leads the team in total receiving yards with 73 yards and a touchdown. His 18 points scored thus far this season also puts him on top in that category.
Following Bennett in the rushing stats are Truman Brown, who ran for 49 yards on 11 carries in a reserve role in last week’s game against E.C. Glass High School, a mark that yields an average of 4.45 yards per carry. Devan Richardson is averaging 3.71 yards per carry with 63 yards on 17 carries.
As a team, the Comets are averaging about four and a half yards per carry.
In the receiving category, Bennett has one catch for 73 yards and a touchdown. J.J. Crews follows Bennett with an average of 24.7 yards per catch. Tyler Dunn has a 7.5-yard per catch average.
The Comets will be looking for their first win of the season Friday night when they travel to Roxboro, N.C. to face Person (N.C.) High School in a clash of border rivals. Kickoff time is 7 p.m.
