Golfers finish as runner-up in tri-match

Looking to prepare his golfers for district matches down the road, Halifax County High School golf coach David Graham put a different group of golfers on the course for Thursday’s nine-hole match against Tunstall High School and Dan River High School at Ringgold Golf Course.

The results were good.

The Comets turned in a team total of 166, a mark that left them with a second-place finish behind winner Tunstall High School (148), but a good bit ahead of third-place finisher Dan River High School, which carded a round of 179.

Ryan Powell led the Comets with a round of 40. He was followed by Alex Tepper (41) and Chase Oakes (42).

Robert Guthrie and Chase Wilkerson carded a round of 43 and Anna Carole Cole came in with a round of 44.

The four best scores were counted toward the team total.

“I was pleased,” Graham said.

“This group was a mixture of sophomores and juniors. There were no real high scores. The scores of our number one and number six players were within four strokes of each other, which shows good consistency.”

Graham said he saw a mix of both good and bad from his players, but, overall saw a good effort.

“I certainly saw improvement,” he pointed out.

“Some of them played in this particular match last year and all of those that competed in this match last year improved on what they shot in the match.

“This certainly was not bad,” added Graham.

“We probably should have been at around 158 to 160. We just need to work with them on improving their mental focus. I’d like to see them not give away as many shots as they did and focus more.”

The Comets golf team will be back in action Wednesday, competing in the second of five regular-season Western Valley District Tournaments. GW will host the event at Danville Country Club, with tee time at 2 p.m.

Halifax County High School’s junior varsity golfers will compete in a match Thursday at Colonial Hills Golf Course in Lynchburg. Host E.C. Glass High School and Franklin County High School will also compete in that match.
