High school golfers score milestone win

It has been a long time coming, but the Halifax County High School golf has climbed to the top of the Western Valley District standings.

Playing its first regular-season district tournament Monday at the par-70 Willow Creek Country Club in Rocky Mount, the Comets carded four rounds in the 70’s to post a 296 total and took a 12-shot win over runner-up and tournament host Franklin County High School.

The round of 296, which included identical rounds of 73 from Joey Gasperini, Peter Gasperini and Josh Irby and a round of 77 from Tyler Holt, was the best round a Comets golf team has posted in at least 15 years.

The Gasperini brothers and Irby were co-medalist winners for the tournament, as their rounds of 73 topped the field.

“It was a very impressive showing by the team,” said Comets Head Coach David Graham.

“It’s lowest score we’ve had since I’ve been coaching the team for 15 years. We have a good group of kids that are working hard and Monday showed that. I think it’s the first time we’ve been in the district lead since I’ve been coaching the team.”

The Comets got a break when one of Franklin County High School’s top golfers, Landon Prillaman, was disqualified as the result of a mix-up with his scorecard. Had the disqualification not occurred, the Comets’ winning margin would have been only three shots.

“It was just a mix-up in scoring,” Graham explained.

“The person keeping his score thought he had one score and put down another, and the mistake wasn’t caught until the match was over. It was just a mix-up.It wasn’t one of our kids that was keeping his score.

“It’s an unfortunate situation,” Graham said.

“But, it (the chase for the district championship) is still going to be close. Franklin County has a very good team. I know our kids have worked really hard to get on top, now they’re going to have to work harder to stay there. I told them to enjoy it and we’ll get back to work.”

One of the big keys to the Comets’ good finish on Monday was the ability of the players to close out their respective rounds on a good note. Peter Gasperini and Josh Irby were both one-under par for the last three holes, Joey Gasperini was two under par for his last three holes and Holt had a par on each of his last six holes.

“They’ve had good rounds going in the past, but haven’t been bringing it in,” Graham noted.

“They have played well, but they finished strong Monday. That’s the big thing we’ve been working on.”

The Comets will be back in action today at 4:30 p.m. when they face Dan River High School in a match at Ringgold Golf Course. The next district tournament is next Wednesday at Blue Hills Golf Club in Roanoke with William Fleming High School as the host team.
