Senior pitcher Dylan Sons of the Halifax County High School varsity baseball team has been named Co-Player of the Year for the Western Valley District (WVD), and Halifax County Head Coach Kelvin Davis has been named Coach of the Year for the WVD.
Sons, who shares Player of the Year honors with Blake Bivens of GW-Danville, was 3-0 in the regular season with a 1.40 ERA, finishing with 49 strikeouts in 30 innings pitched.
Sons averaged 11.43 strikeouts per game.
Sons, who also was named to the Honorable Mention, All-WVD team at first base, hit .348 in the regular season with 16 hits, including five doubles, a triple and five RBIs.
Also named First Team, All-WVD were senior first baseman Joe Martin, sophomore second baseman Will Harris, senior outfielders Will Worley and Ford Bradshaw, and junior outfielder Ryan Yates, with Bradshaw making the first team as the utility position and Yates as a designated hitter.
Comets named Second Team, All-WVD, included senior third baseman Patrick Barton, junior shortstop Nick Anderson, junior pitcher Seth Elliott and senior catcher Dylan Hendricks, while both Yates and Bradshaw were named to the Second Team as outfielders.
Bradshaw led the Comets with a batting average of .537 in the regular season, with 22 hits including a triple, six doubles and 12 RBIs, while Anderson had a .452 average with 14 hits, including four doubles and eight RBIs.
Barton had a regular season batting average of .362 with 17 hits, including three home runs, six doubles and 12 RBIs, Harris had a .434 average with 23 hits, including five doubles, two triples and 10 RBIs, and Worley had a batting average of .400 with 20 hits, including a home run, six doubles, three triples and 17 RBIs.
Martin had a batting average of .273 for the regular season with 12 hits, including a home run, four doubles and 18 RBIs, and Yates had a batting average of .500 with 22 hits, including four doubles and 14 RBIs.
Elliott had a record of 3-0 on the mound in the regular season for the Comets with a 0.93 ERA. He finished with 17 strikeouts in 30 innings of work, and he averaged 3.97 strikeouts a game.
Hendricks hit .381 for the regular season with 16 hits, including four doubles and seven RBIs.
Halifax County finished with a 13-4 record in the regular season.
