Trayvon Brandon finished fifth in the high jump, and Treyquan Holt recorded a fifth-place finish in the discus to lead the Halifax County High School track teams’ efforts at the Group 5A Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
The meet was held Friday and Saturday at Todd Stadium in Newport News.
Brandon recorded a height of six feet in the high jump, and Holt threw the discus a distance of 137 feet, nine inches, good for fifth in that event.
Tyrika Lee placed eighth in the 200-meter dash in 25.38 seconds.
Also coming home with top-10 finishes at the state meet were Roland Brandon, 10th in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.88 seconds, Devan Richardson, 10th in the 100-meter dash in 11.27 seconds, and William Brooks, seventh in the 400-meter dash in 50.82 seconds.
Both the Comets boys and girls 4x100-meter relay teams recorded top-10 finishes at the state meet, with Brooks, Trayvon Brandon, Roland Brandon and Richardson finishing fourth in the boys 4x100-meter dash in 43.15 seconds.
The girls 4x100-meter relay team consisting of Shanita Johnson, E’Lisha Lee, Kayla Forest and Tyrika Lee ran a time of 49.37 seconds for a ninth-place finish in that event.
Other Comets competing at the state meet in individual events included Kayla Forest, with an 11th-place finish in the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash in 12.69 seconds; and E’Lisha Lee with a 15th-place finish in the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash in 13.03 seconds.
The Comets boys outdoor track team compiled 14 points, good for 19th-place among 36 teams, and the Comets’ girls recorded one point at the point among 41 teams.
