Comets softball, boys soccer teams Conference 16 runner-up

The Halifax County High School softball team and boys soccer team lost in their respective bids for the 5A North Region Conference 16 championship Monday afternoon.

Despite the loss, the two teams have qualified to compete in the 5A North Region Tournament and both teams will host first-round regional tournament games Friday at Halifax County High School against opponents that will be announced later.

The Comets softball team fell to Patrick Henry High School-Ashland 4-0 in Ashland, and the Comets boys soccer team lost 4-0 to Albemarle High School of Charlottesville at Tuck Dillard Memorial Stadium.

In the softball game against Patrick Henry High School-Ashland, the Comets had only four players to reach base during the game. The Comets' biggest flurry came in the top of the fourth inning when pitcher Taylor Barnes and catcher Ashley Watts put together back-to-back hits.

The only other times the Comets had runners reach base came when Megan Watts walked in the fifth inning and Barnes reached base on a PH error in the sixth inning.

PH took the lead with a run in the first inning, added a run in the third inning and scored twice in the fifth inning, taking advantage of two hits and a pair of walks.

Barnes struck out five batters and allowed seven hits and yielded five walks.

The Comets boys soccer team had a tough outing against Albemarle High School at Halifax County High School, yielding a goal with 30 seconds left in the first half and then seeing Albemarle strike quickly in the second half with two goals in the first six minutes to get up 3-0.

Albemarle added an insurance goal with just over nine minutes left in the game to cap the 4-0 win.

Halifax County High School had three good scoring opportunities in the first half when the Comets' scoring leader Collin Kashmer found himself in one-on-one opportunities against an Albemarle defender but couldn't score a goal.

Albemarle had 19 shots on goal during the game and had 14 corner kicks.

The Comets got off four shots at the Albemarle High School goal and had three corner kicks. Goalkeeper Isak Schafer had 11 saves in the contest.
