Comets softball team crushes GW 12-1

The Halifax County High School varsity softball team advanced to Tuesday's Piedmont District Tournament semi-finals with a 12-1 win over GW in Monday's opening-round tournament game at Halifax County High School.

With the win, the Comets will now face Franklin County High School Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Patrick County High School in Stuart, which is hosting the tournament semi-finals and championship game.

The Comets pounded GW with 17 hits, with Taylor Barnes leading the way with a 4-4 effort at the plate that included a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning.

Cecilie Elliott had three hits and three RBIs and Kye- Elisha Logan had three hits and two RBIs. Megan Puckett, Ashley Watts and Gabby Spainhour each had two hits. Kirsten Doss had one hit.

"The girls hit the ball much better tonight," noted Comets Head Coach Melanie Saunders.

"They were able to adjust to the slower pitch and got some good shots."

Comets pitcher Sidney McLamb had a solid night on the mound, allowing five scattered hits and one walk. She struck out one batter.

GW led briefly, with leadoff batter Carly Meeks reaching base on a walk and scoring on a hit from Marlene Carlson to put GW up 1-0 in the top of the first inning.

The Comets answered with four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 4-1 lead, which they never lost.

Doss led off with a triple and scored on a hit by Puckett to tie the game at 1-1. Barnes followed with the first of her four hits in the game. Puckett scored when Ashley Watts grounded out to give the Comets a 2-1 lead. An RBI double from Elliott and a run-scoring hit from Logan put the Comets up 4-1.

The Comets added two runs in the third inning when Barnes led off with a hit and scored on a hit from Elliott. A double by Logan plated Elliott and gave the Comets a 6-1 lead.

In the fourth inning, Megan Watts walked and moved to third base on a double from Puckett. A double from Barnes scored Watts. A hit from Ashley Watts scored Puckett and a single from Spainhour scored Barnes to put the Comets up 9-1.

The Comets added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the win, the first coming on Barnes' solo homer. Ashley Watts followed with a single and scored on a double from Spainhour. A double from Elliott scored Spainhour to put the Comets up 12-1 and cap the scoring.
