The Happy Feet Road Runners Club was organized by Virginia Hightower Sargent as a way to continue the work of her mom, Virginia Maude Dixon Hightower, a renowned poet and tireless advocate for peace and goodwill for all Halifax County residents.
Since her mom’s passing a little more than a year ago, Sargent has worked diligently with county officials to ensure that the Happy Feet 5K race will be safely organized.
A former 400-meter sprinter on the Halifax County High School track team, Sargent remembers the times when it was tough getting a ride home from track practice. To her, health and fitness is the gift of life, and is the perfect thing to do for Halifax County.
“We truly appreciate the efforts of Dr. Virginia Hightower Sargent and the Happy Feet Road Runners Club as they coordinate the Happy Feet 5K Run/Walk event to financially support the HCPS Activity Bus program for high school students,” noted Halifax County School Superintendent Dr. Merle Herndon.
The Halifax County Happy Feet 5K Run/Walk is being organized in memory of Hightower to promote a healthier Halifax County. According to the County Rankings and Roadmaps report that measures the health of counties in all 50 states, Halifax County ranks 112th out of 133 counties and independent cities in Virginia, signaling alarm to rising statistics in heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity and more.
“It is important for each of us to maintain good health and to provide positive examples of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, says Halifax County Administrator Jim Halasz.
“I strongly support efforts such as the Happy Feet 5K on April 26 and hope to be there myself.”
The Happy Feet 5K Run/Walk will start at 9 a.m. at the Halifax County Middle School bus parking lot/ Runners of all ages will run or walk along the access road pass the Tisha Long Track & Field Stadium to Halifax County High School and back.
