Top seeds advance in Industrial tourney

There were few surprises in the opening round of the South Boston Business & Industrial League Tournament, with top seeds Dollar General/Unarco and United Steps/Felton Brothers advancing.

Two seed United Steps/Felton had little trouble in beating Dollar General II 76-35, while one seed DG/Unarco won by forfeit over Goodyear.

Three seed Halifax Regional edged six seed AWNC 60-57, and Presto/Halifax County, seeded fifth coming into the tournament recorded the only upset, getting past four seed ABB 63-56.

Keith Gutrich of Halifax Regional and Aaron Holloway of Presto/Halifax County were named Players of the Week for their performances on Sunday.

Gutrich scored 20 points, including two 3-pointers, in his team’s win over AWNC, and Holloway scored 13 points to help give his team the win over ABB. 

The tournament semifinals are set for Sunday, with Halifax Regional playing United Steps/Felton at 3 p.m., followed by Dollar General/Unarco and Presto/Halifax County playing the other semifinal at 5 p.m.

The tournament finals are set for Jan. 26 at 5:30 p.m.


United Steps/Felton 76 Dollar General II 35

United Steps/Felton raced to a 42-23 lead at halftime and cruised to the plus 30-point win over Dollar General II.

Five players scored in double figures for United Steps/Felton, including Aaron Hill and Cordaro Jones, each with a game-high 14 points.

Shumane Terry and Trumane Terry each scored 12 points, and Donald Watson added 10 points for United Steps/Felton, with the five double figure scorers accounting for 37 points in the first half.

Watson, Shuman Terry and Jones each added six points in the second half as United Steps/Felton continued to pull away.

Terrell Venable and LaQuinton Johnson tried to keep Dollar General II in the game, with Venable hitting two 3-pointers among his 10 points, and Venable hitting three 3-pointers for his nine points.

Dollar General II connected on six 3-pointers for the game and was 3-8 from the foul line, while United Steps/Felton Brothers hit two 3-pointers and was 7-13 from the charity stripe.


Halifax Regional 60 AWNC 57

Halifax Regional led by 17 points at halftime but had to withstand a second-half rally by AWNC before securing a 60-57 win.

Keon Gutrich scored 21 points to lead Halifax Regional, including a pair of 3-pointers, and Keith Gutrich notched 20 points, also with two 3-pointers.

Demetrius Burrell added 14 points, including two 3-pointers for Halifax Regional, which got 26 points from Keith and Keon Gutrich in the first half.

AWNC rallied in the second half behind Kelvin Eldridge and Lymon Gregory, Eldridge with 15 points and Gregory with 12 points after intermission.

Eldridge finished with 19 points and Gregory 14 points for AWNC, which connected on two 3-pointers and was 5-12 from the free throw line.

Halifax Regional connected on seven 3-pointers and was 13-20 from the charity stripe.


Presto/Halifax County 63 ABB 56

The one mild upset of the day saw five seed Presto/Halifax County defeat four seed ABB.

Nine different players scored for Presto/Halifax County in the first half to help give them a 35-25 lead at intermission.

Double-figure scorers Eric Pounds, Aaron Holloway and Sterling Williams took over in the second half, with Pounds scoring 10 of his 14 points, Holloway seven of his 13 points and Williams eight of his 10 points for Presto/Halifax County.

ABB countered with three double figure scorers of its own, Dre’ Tucker leading the way with 16 points, while Obie Coleman had 12 points and Stacey Majors 11 points.

ABB connected on seven 3-point attempts and was 5-13 at the free throw line, and Presto/Halifax County hit six 3-pointers, including three from Nicklous Thaxton. 

Presto/Halifax County was 5-9 from the charity stripe as a team.
