DG/Unarco takes lead in industrial league play

Dollar General/Unarco seems to be on a mission to take back the South Boston Business & Industrial Basketball League title it lost to United Steps/Felton Brothers last season, improving to 8-1 with a 64-54 win over Halifax Regional on Sunday.

DG/Unarco is one game ahead of SoBo Tees and defending champion United Steps/Felton after SoBo Tees (7-2) dropped a 41-40 decision to Presto/Halifax County.

United/Felton (7-2) stayed within one game of the top spot with a 75-42 win over Benchmark Bankers, dropping Benchmark below .500 (4-5).

The other two games Sunday saw ABB improve to 5-4 with a 77-41 rout of Goodyear to improve to 5-4, while AWNC edged Dollar General II 43-41 to improve to 4-5 on the season. 

Dollar General II remained winless on the season with the loss.

Clifton Terry of DG/Unarco, Savaughn Bailey of Presto/Halifax County, and Kelvin Eldridge of AWNC received Player of the Game awards for their performances on Sunday.

Terry scored 14 points, 12 in the second half as his team rallied for a win over Halifax Regional, and Bailey scored 13 points, including a game-winning 3-pointer in his team’s win over SoBo Tees.

Eldridge tallied a game-high 21 points, as AWNC edged Dollar General II.

 

DG/Unarco 64 Halifax Regional 54

A second-half rally gave DG/Unarco the win over Halifax Regional, with Clifton Terry scoring 12 of his 14 points and Tyrone Barksdale 10 of his 15 after intermission.

Keon Gutrich scored 13 of his game-high 19 points and Demetrius Burrell hit four of his five 3-pointers in the first half, as Halifax Regional built a 33-26 lead.

DG/Unarco fought back, hitting five 3-pointers and seven of nine free throw opportunities in the second half to complete its comeback.

Joey Barksdale canned three 3-pointers among his 14 points, and Chris Murphy added 10 second-half points, including a pair of 3-pointers for DG/Unarco.

Keith Gutrich hit three 3-pointers among his 16 points, and Burrell scored 15 points for Halifax Regional, which hit eight 3-pointers and was 6-9 at the foul line.

DG/Unarco hit seven 3-point opportunities and was 12-16 at the charity stripe as a team.

 

Presto/Halifax County 41 SoBo Tees 40

Eric Pounds scored 14 points and Savaughn Bailey added 13, including a game-winning 3-pointer with two seconds remaining, as Presto/Halifax County edged SoBo Tees 41-40.

Sobo Tees led 21-20 at halftime behind six points from Robert Ross and five points from Shai Jones, but Presto/Halifax County rallied in the second half behind Savaughn Bailey and Eric Pounds.

Pounds scored nine of his team-high 14 points in the second half, and Bailey hit two 3-pointers among his eight points after intermission to lead the comeback.

Bailey finished with 13 points, including three 3-pointers, and Pounds added two treys for Presto/Halifax County, which connected on seven 3-pointers but didn’t convert from the foul line (0-8).

Ross led SoBo Tees with a game-high 15 points, while Waverly Harris added seven.

SoBo Tees hit two 3-pointers but lost the game at the foul line going 8-25 as a team.

 

ABB 77 Goodyear 41

Dre’ Tucker scored a game-high 30 points, including six 3-pointers, as ABB ran away to the win over Goodyear.

ABB built a 27-16 advantage at halftime and put the game away in the second half with a 50-25 surge after intermission.

Obie Coleman added 23 points, including three 3-pointers for ABB, which also got nine points from Jonathan Fields.

Terry Bowe led Goodyear with 18 points, including four 3-pointers, and Bruce Wilson added eight points.

ABB connected on 12 3-pointers for the game and was 3-7 from the foul line, and Goodyear hit seven 3-pointers as a team but was 0-3 at the charity stripe.

 

United Steps/Felton 75
Benchmark Bankers 42

United Steps/Felton Brothers put four players in double figures in a 75-42 rout of Benchmark
Bankers. 

Aaron Hill scored 16 points, Donald Watson scored 15 points, and Cordaro Jones and Niven Barksdale each added 11 points for United/Felton, which built a 37-19 lead at intermission and cruised home to the win.

Benchmark Bankers put three players in double figures, Geoff Grant finishing with 17 points, including three 3-pointers.

Johnny Wilson and Scott Martin each added 11 points for Benchmark Bankers, which hit six 3-pointers and was 3-5 from the free throw line.

United Steps/Felton connected on nine 3-pointers for the game and was 4-10 from the charity stripe.

 

AWNC 43 Dollar General II 41

Dollar General was denied its first win of the season after AWNC rallied in the second half for a 43-41 win.

LaQuinton Johnson scored a team-high 18 points, 13 in the first half to help give Dollar General II a 23-21 lead at intermission.

AWNC rallied in the second half behind Kelvin Eldridge, who scored eight of his game-high 21 points after intermission, and Clifton Miller, who notched all of his eight points in the second half.

Demon Pittman added nine points for AWNC, which connected on one 3-pointer and was 2-13 at the free throw line. 

Keith Delaware scored 10 points for Dollar General II, which connected on four 3-pointers and was 1-4 from the charity stripe.
