Halifax Regional ended SoBo Tees’ five-game winning streak to start the South Boston Business & Industrial Basketball League season Sunday with a 42-41 win.
Demetrius Burrell, one of four Players of the Week, scored nine points for Halifax Regional, which led 30-17 at halftime but had to withstand a second half comeback by SoBo Tees.
Alex Gambino added 13 points, 10 coming in the first half, while Keith Gutrich scored eight points, including two 3-pointers.
Clyde Waller scored a game-high 20 points for SoBo Tees, including three 3-pointers, and Thomas Carrington and Alfred Ford each added six points.
Halifax Regional connected on three 3-point field goals for the game and was 11-19 at the foul line, and SoBo Tees finished with four 3-pointers and was 7-10 at the charity stripe.
SoBo Tees dropped to 5-1 with Sunday’s loss, while Halifax Regional improved to 4-2.
In other action, Dollar General/Unarco (5-1) earned a first-place tie with SoBo Tees with a 59-55 win in overtime over United Steps/Felton Brothers (4-2), ABB improved to 4-2 on the season with a 49-47 win over Dollar General II (0-6), and Presto/Halifax County saw its record improve to 2-4 with a 45-38 win over Goodyear (0-6).
Benchmark Bankers evened its season record at 3-3 with a 50-35 win over AWNC, which also stands at 3-3 after losing on Sunday.
DG/Unarco 59 United Steps/Felton 55 (Overtime)
In a rematch of last year’s championship game, DG/Unarco got a game-high 22 points from Player of the Week Ty Barksdale in an 59-55 overtime win over United Steps/Felton.
Joey Barksdale scored 17 points, including four 3-pointers, and Demario Guy added 14 points, including one 3-pointer for DG/Unarco, which led at halftime 24-22 behind Ty Barksdale’s 12 first-half points, including four 3-pointers.
Cordaro Jones, who led United Steps/Felton with 20 points, scored 17 points in the second half to help force overtime with the score at 51-51 after regulation.
Alexio Hargrave scored 10 points for United Steps/Felton, including two treys, and Shumane Terry added nine points, including one 3-pointer.
Guy led his team in scoring in the extra session with five points, while Ty Barksdale went 3-4 at the charity stripe.
Jones hit a field goal and Hargrave was 2-2 at the foul line in the extra session for United Steps/Felton, which connected on four 3-pointers and was 9-14 at the free throw line.
DG/Unarco connected on nine 3-pointers and was 14-121 at the charity stripe.
ABB 49 Dollar General II 47
Another close game saw ABB use balanced scoring to edge Dollar General II, with seven players hitting the scorebook.
Player of the Week Dre’ Tucker scored 17 points to lead ABB, including a 3-pointer, while Stacey Majors scored nine points, including two 3-pointers.
Jermaine Richardson added eight points for ABB, which led 33-30 at halftime and fended off Dollar General II in the second half.
Devin Beck led three players in double figures for Dollar General II finishing with 16 points, while Keith Delaware added 14 points (two 3-pointers), all coming in the first half.
Terrell Venable scored 12 points, including three 3-pointers, for Dollar General II, which connected on five 3-pointers and was 4-8 at the foul line.
ABB connected on five 3-pointers and was 4-13 at the charity stripe.
Presto/Halifax County 45 Goodyear 38
Another balanced scoring effort gave Presto/Halifax County a win over Goodyear, with 10 players hitting the scorebook.
Eric Pounds led Presto/Halifax County with 15 points, 12 coming before intermission, and he connected on a pair of 3-pointers.
Earnest Boxley and Aaron Holloway each had six points for the winners, who led 27-23 at halftime.
Terry Bowe finished with 12 points to lead Goodyear, Jesse Lampkin scored nine points, and Larry Warren added six points.
Goodyear was successful on six 3-pointers for the contest, three by Lampkin, and it was 2-6 at the free throw line.
Presto/Halifax County connected on five 3-pointers, and it was 6-17 at the charity stripe.
Benchmark Bankers 50 AWNC 35
Benchmark Bankers pulled away from a 23-22 halftime lead to defeat AWNC 50-35 and move to 3-3 on the season.
Player of the Week Geoff Grant scored a game-high 14 points to lead Benchmark, Johnny Wilson scored 12 points, including three 3-pointers, and Justin Saunders and Rodney Mosley added seven points apiece.
Clifton Miller and Gary Boxley each scored 10 points to lead AWNC, and Lymon Gregory added seven points.
AWNC connected on five 3-point baskets, two by Miller, and it was 2-7 from the foul line.
Benchmark connected on six 3-point shots and was 8-15 at the charity stripe, with Grant hitting five of seven free throw attempts.
