ABB improves to 2-0 in Industrial League action

ABB, ranked eighth out of 10 teams in a preseason poll for the South Boston Business & Industrial Basketball League, is off to a 2-0 start, its latest win a 55-41 victory over Presto/Halifax County Sunday at the South Boston Recreation Center.

Dre’ Tucker scored a game-high 19 points for ABB, all in the second half to help ABB erase a 20-19 halftime deficit.

Tucker hit four 3-pointers in the second half comeback among his 19 points and earned Player of the Week honors for his efforts.

Industrial League veteran Michael Jackson added 16 points for ABB, all but two coming in the first half, while Obie Coleman notched 11 points, including a 5-6 game at the charity stripe.

Dominique Banks led Presto/Halifax County with 13 points, including three 3-pointers, while Aaron Holloway added 10 and Eric Pounds eight points, respectively.

ABB was 11-21 at the free throw line during the game compared to a 6-9 effort from Presto/Halifax County, and ABB connected on a total of four 3-pointers, all from Tucker.

Presto/Halifax County connected on five 3-point attempts for the game.


DG/Unarco 46 AWNC 40

Dennis Torain scored a game-high 18 points for AWNC, but Ty Barksdale and Player of the Week Clifton Terry scored 14 points each for DG/Unarco in a 46-40 win that left DG/Unarco with a 2-0 record.

Joey Barksdale added eight points for DG/Unarco, which found itself tied with AWNC 22-22 at halftime but got 12 points from Terry in the second half to get a little breathing room.

Demon Pittman added eight points for AWNC, which connected on four 3-pointers and was 6-9 at the free throw line.

DG/Unarco connected on two 3-pointers for the game and was 5-15 at the charity stripe.


SoBo Tees 39 United Steps/Felton 25

Player of the Week Robert Ross scored 14 points to lead SoBo Tees to a 39-25 win over defending league champion United Steps/Felton.

Ross scored seven points in each half and was 4-8 at the foul line in the win.

Shai Jones scored eight points and Clyde Waller added seven points for SoBo Tees, who were tied with United Steps/Felton 16-16 at intermission.

Aaron Hill led United Steps/Felton with eight points, while Donald Watson added six and Andre Clarke four points.

SoBo Tees connected on three 3-pointers in the game and was 8-15 from the foul line, while United Steps/Felton went scoreless behind the 3-point line.


Halifax Regional 46 Goodyear 31

Demetrius Burrell scored a game-high 19 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead Halifax Regional to its first win.

Keon Gutrich added 10 points and Alex Gambino added six for Halifax Regional, which led at halftime 22-16 and outscored Goodyear 24-15 in the second half.

Bruce Wilson and Lamont Averett led Goodyear with six points each, and Larry Warren added five points.

Halifax Regional connected for four 3-pointers and was 8-15 from the charity stripe, while Goodyear connected on one 3-point attempt for the game.


Benchmark 61 Dollar General 45

Justin Saunders led three players in double figures as Benchmark won its first game of the season with a 61-45 win over Dollar General.

Saunders scored 22 points, Geoff Grant 18 points and Johnny Wilson 17 points for Benchmark, which led 29-16 at halftime.

Dollar General put two players in double figures, Laquinton Johnson with 13 points and P.J. Boyd with 11 points.

Benchmark connected on five 3-pointers, two each from Saunders and Wilson, while Dollar General connected on eight 3-pointers, three from Johnson.

Benchmark was 9-20 at the free throw line during the game, while Dollar General was 3-7 from the charity stripe.
