Defending champs win biz-industrial league opener

Defending champion United Steps/Felton is off to a good start in defending its title in the South Boston Business & Industrial Basketball League, beating Benchmark 46-24 in its opener on Sunday.

In other action, ABB defeated Goodyear 43-26, SoBo Tees routed Presto/Halifax County 58-42, Dollar General-Unarco edged Halifax Regional 54-51, and AWNC defeated Dollar General 58-30.

Sunday’s round of exhibition games were a fundraiser for the Halifax County Cancer Association and will be used as tiebreakers at the end of the season for tournament seeding purposes.

 

United Steps/Felton 46 

Benchmark 24

The defending champions used balanced scoring to defeat Benchmark, with 10 players scoring at least two points.

Aaron Hill scored eight points to lead United/Felton, Cordaro Jones had seven, and Shumane Terry and Truman Terry scored six points apiece for United/Felton, which owned a 21-9 lead at halftime.

Justin Saunders hit three 3-pointers for nine points, Geoff Grant had six and Johnny Wilson five points for Benchmark, which hit five 3-pointers and was 2-5 from the free throw line.

Hill hit three 3-pointers for United/Felton, which was 1-6 from the foul line as a team.

 

ABB 43 Goodyear 26

Another low scoring game saw ABB pull away from a 23-10 halftime lead before defeating Goodyear.

Jermaine Richardson led ABB with 13 points, while Dre’ Tucker added 11 and Jonathan Fields eight points.

Quincy Hairston led Goodyear with five points, while Lamont Averett and Chauncey Jones added four points apiece.

ABB connected on two 3-pointers for the game and was 5-17 from the foul line, while Goodyear hit three 3-pointers as a team and was 3-4 from the charity stripe.

 

SoBo Tees 58 Presto/Halifax 42

SoBo Tees turned a 27-6 halftime lead into a 58-42 win over Presto/Halifax, with Waverly Harris (four 3-pointers) scoring 16 points and Robert Ross 13 points for the winners.

Clyde Waller and Shai Jones chipped in eight points apiece for SoBo Tees, which connected on five 3-pointers as a team and was 9-21 at the charity stripe.

Nicklous Thaxton led Presto/Halifax with 12 points, all coming on 3-pointers, while Savaughn Bailey added seven and Eric Pounds five points.

Nicklous Thaxton connected on four 3-pointers for 12 points to lead Presto/Halifax, which hit six 3-pointers as a team and was 4-10 from the foul line. 

 

DG/Unarco 54 Halifax Regional 51

Ty Barksdale scored a team-high 17 points, including four 3-pointers to lead DG/Unarco to a win over Halifax Regional.

Chris Murphy added eight points and Joey Barksdale seven points for DG/Unarco, which led at halftime 30-18.

Keon Gutrich scored a game-high 21 points for Halifax Regional, and Demetrius Burrell added 18, points, Burrell hitting four 3-pointers.

DG/Unarco connected on eight 3-pointers as a team and was 6-12 from the charity stripe, and Halifax Regional hit six 3-pointers as a team and was 5-6 from the free throw line.

 

AWNC 59 Dollar General 30

AWNC rolled to a 20-8 lead at halftime and went on to a win over Dollar General.

A total of 13 players scored at least two points for AWNC, with Kevin Eldridge scoring 10 points, Clifton Miller nine points and Emanuel Harris seven points, while Damon Melton added five points.

LaQuinton Johnson scored 13 points to lead Dollar General, while Bandon Boyd and Keith Delaware added seven and six points, respectively.

AWNC three 3-pointers and was 12-18 from the foul line as a team, and Dollar General connected on four 3-pointers and was 4-11 from the charity stripe.
