Kay Burton wins Halifax Country Club ladies championship

Make it three straight Halifax Country Club ladies club championships and four overall for Kay Burton.

Burton, who shot a two-day total of 86-83-169, won by two strokes over Pat Crew in the Championship Flight.

Crew, who fired an 86-83-171, defeated first round leader Linda Lumsden (84-87-171) in a playoff for second-place in the Championship Flight.

Lorene Womble won the First Flight with Carol Gravitt finishing second, and Janice Irby Snead won the Second Flight, with Rosalynde Robertson finishing in second-place.

Burton also won the Green’s Folly Golf Course club championship recently, her third straight and fourth overall at that course.

She had an easier time navigating that course this year, she explained.

“Green’s Folly was a little easier for me this year, the greens were perfect, the fairways were perfect, and of course at Halifax the greens were not perfect,” said Burton.

“We’ve had too much rain, and I struggled a little bit.  On Saturday I struggled a lot, but I did play a little better on Sunday.”

“I didn’t really play my best,” she added.  The greens had a lot of bare spots, and when you putt the ball it isn’t true, and you didn’t know whether to hit it hard or hit it easy

“I had trouble putting, tee to green wasn’t that bad, but I missed a lot of short, little putts.

“You couldn’t get on a roll the way you could at Green’s Folly Golf Course.”

Burton had to focus more on her short game on Sunday to catch Lumsden.

“Linda played better Saturday, she had 84 and I had an 86,” said Burton.

“I missed so many little putts on Saturday and that was the difference.

“She played well, and today I tried to buckle down and tired to not three-putt today, but it was really hard.

“I played a little bit better today.”
