Comets Grapplers Sweep On Senior Night

Senior Night could not have been any better for the Halifax County High School wrestling team. The Comets made a sweep of their final home matches of the season, downing Nottoway High School 48-24 and defeating Heritage High School of Lynchburg 51-12.

Halifax County High School’s two senior wrestlers, 130-pounder Ralph Tuck and 215-pounder Justin Perkins, pinned both of their opponents. The Comets also got two pins each from 125-pounder Tyler Bentley and 152-pounder Lewis Ashworth.

Making things better, the two wins allowed the Comets to reach the 10-win mark for the season, improving their season record to 10-19.

Both Nottoway High School and Heritage High School were in a situation similar to that of Halifax County in that they had to forfeit a handful of weight classes.

When it came to competition, the Comets had a good night, winning eight of the 10 contested weight classes in the match against Nottoway and winning four of the five contested weight classes in the match against Heritage.

In all, the Comets won 12 out of 15 contested matches.

“We’re real happy with the way things went,” said Comets head coach Brady Taylor.

“It’s a great way to finish out our home schedule. I’m glad to see both Ralph and Justin come out with two wins on Senior Night and end their careers in their home gym on top. All around we had a great night.”

Taylor said the big thing for the night was the fact that his wrestlers won the overwhelming majority of the contests that they competed in.

“Both teams (Nottoway and Heritage) are in a similar situation to us,” Taylor noted.

“They had some forfeits and we had some forfeits. We wrestled well tonight. We won the majority of all of the matches that were wrestled and the forfeits really didn’t come into play.”

Wednesday’s event, the last of the team’s three home dates for the season, kicked off a busy late-week schedule for the Comets wrestlers.

Last night, the Comets were set to travel to E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg to compete against E.C. Glass, Appomattox High School and Brookville High School.

On Saturday, weather permitting, the Comets are scheduled to travel to GW High School in Danville to compete in a Western Valley District quad meet, a meet that will pit them against each of their four fellow Western Valley District teams.

“It’s going to be a long week of wrestling,” Taylor mused.

“Hopefully we can keep things rolling the way they are. Saturday’s district quad will be a big contest. That’s a big competition as far as individual seedings for the upcoming district tournament are concerned.”
