The Virginia High School League Redistricting and Reclassification Committee yesterday denied a request from Roanoke school system officials to drop Western Valley District members Patrick Henry High School and William Fleming High School to Group AA status. As a result of the action, the Western Valley District, which also includes Halifax County High School, GW and Franklin County High School, will remain intact for at least the next two-year cycle, which begins with the 2011-2012 school year.
Roanoke school system officials cited lengthy travel and the financial impact of travel as its reason for seeking to get the two schools dropped to Group AA status.
Also yesterday, the VHSL approved a request by neighboring Bluestone High School to drop from the Group AA Southside District to the Group A James River District, Region B.
The VHSL also approved a request from Group AA Southside District member Nottoway High School to drop to the Group A James River District, Region B.
The VHSL R&R Committee heard proposals yesterday for modifications to the proposed school and district alignment plan that was unveiled in September.
Modifications to the plan that were made at today’s meeting will be presented for information to the VHSL Executive Committee and to the membership for discussion in March.
The deadline for schools that wish to appeal yesterday’s recommendations is Wednesday, March 17.
The R&R Committee will meet April 19 to consider final appeals to the plan.
