A champion will be crowned in the Dixie Youth Baseball District 2 O-Zone League tournament, starting today at the Day Complex in South Boston, but it won’t be defending champion Halifax.
Halifax and South Boston Dixie Youth Baseball programs joined forces this past season and will field two teams for the tournament, South Boston National and South Boston American.
They join the Scottsburg O-Zone all-stars in the three-team tourney that will produce the district’s representative for the Virginia Dixie Youth Baseball O-Zone State Tournament starting July 19 in South Hill.
Opening ceremonies are set for today at 6 p.m. followed by the opening game between South Boston American and South Boston National at 6:30 p.m.
South Boston American will play Scottsburg at 7 p.m. on Saturday, and South Boston National will play Scottsburg at 7 p.m. on Sunday in the double elimination tournament.
If two teams remain standing after Sunday’s game they will play Monday at 7 p.m. and Tuesday at 7 p.m. if necessary.
If all three teams have one loss after three games, a drawing will be held for a bye to Tuesday, with the other two teams playing Monday at 7 p.m.
Last year’s tournament produced big momentum swings and a number of comebacks from large deficits by all three teams.
South Boston defeated Scottsburg 10-8 in the tournament opener but lost to Halifax 10-7 the next day.
Halifax eliminated Scottsburg 12-11 on Sunday, but South Boston forced an extra game to decide the tournament championship with a 10-9 win over Halifax on Monday.
Halifax rallied from an early six-run deficit the next day to edge South Boston 9-8 for a berth in the O-Zone state tournament.
