Halifax National wins Angels title

A seven-run third inning propelled Halifax National to an 8-3 win over Halifax American and the Dixie Softball District 7 Angels X-Play championship Monday night at Mary Bethune Complex in Halifax.

National finished with two hits for the game, a first inning single by Autumn Younger and a second inning single by Susanna Watts, and American finished with three hits, a third inning double by Raegan Ridgeway, second inning double by Mandy Lewis and a fourth inning single by Shaniya Boyd.

American held a 1-0 lead after its first at-bat when Kayla Townes drew a walk and later scored on a fielder’s choice, but National scored seven runs in the third inning to take a 7-1 lead on walks to Kayla Spencer, Sarah Gordon, Younger, Kaitlyn Richardson (RBI), Gracie Wagstaff (RBI), Chloe Loftis, Madison Watkins (RBI), Hailey Marable (RBI), Watts (RBI) and Spencer again (RBI). 

National scored its final run in the top of the fourth when Younger walked and later scored on a passed ball, but American cut the deficit to 8-3 when Mandy Lewis reached base and Hailey Beadles walked before a single by Shaniya Boyd.

Halifax American forced a third and deciding game for the District 7 Angels X-Play title with a 9-7 win on Sunday.

Skyla Strohm and Boyd led American with two hits apiece for the game, Strohm with a double, single and a RBI.

Halifax National finished with five hits for the game, Younger with a double and single, Wagstaff with a triple and two RBI, Amanda Duffer and Richardson with RBI singles and Watkins with an RBI on a bases loaded walk.

American scored four runs in its first at-bat taking advantage of a hit batsman, four walks and a single by Boyd, and National answered with a run off an American error, walk and stolen base by Younger.

American took advantage of three walks to score a run in the second and added a run in the top of the third when Strohm hit a leadoff single and later scored.

Trailing 6-1, National rallied to tie the game with five runs in the bottom of the third inning on a walk, error, consecutive singles by Duffer, Younger and Richardson, and a pair of bases loaded walks.

American took the lead for good with a run in the fourth off a leadoff hit by Boyd, two walks and a stolen base, and they added two runs in the fifth on a walk, RBI hit by Strohm and a National error.

National rallied in the bottom of the fifth with a double by Younger before Richardson reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on Wagstaff’s RBI triple, but a strikeout ended the game.

American pitchers Raegan Ridgeway and Abbey Martin hurled three and two innings, respectively, finishing with four strikeouts each.

Richardson pitched one inning for National, and Duffer hurled four innings, with Duffer striking out four batters.
