Halifax American wins title

Shekeria Chandler’s walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning gave Halifax American a 6-5 win over Halifax National on Saturday and a two-game sweep and the Dixie Softball District 7 Ponytails X-Play Tournament title on Saturday.

National outscored American 10-7 on Saturday in the first game of the best-of-three series, but American was awarded the win by forfeit on a violation of the substitution rule by Halifax National.

Halifax American advanced to the Virginia Dixie Softball Ponytails X-Play state tournament in Goochland starting July 12 as a result of Saturday’s win.

A back and forth contest saw Halifax American rally with one run in each of the final two innings to win the district title.

National scored one run in the first off a Kenna Moser single, Jessica Auld triple, with Auld scoring on an error, and Shareika Puryear and scored on Amy Wilson’s RBI groundout to make it 2-0 in the top of the second.

Sinclair Hargrave doubled and scored on Leigh-Anne McCormick’s RBI single in the second to bring American to within one run at 2-1, and American took a 3-2 lead in the third on a double by Shekeria Chandler (two RBI), single by Kayla Walker and four National errors.

American added a run in the fourth on a Jessica Balducci single and RBI by Walker, but National added three runs in the fifth on singles by Kassidy Thompson, Calli Neal, Casey Pulliam and Leah Newbill, a walk and American miscues.

American scored one run in the
bottom of the fifth when Jillian Walker singled and scored after a Waller hit, and it won the game in the bottom of the sixth on Chandler’s home run.

Cori Neal, Cara Hancock and Moser added hits for National, and Shakiera Cameron added a hit for American. 

National pitchers Auld and Wilson struck out nine batters and walked five in six innings, while McCormick hurled all six innings for American.


American wins game one by forfeit

Halifax National finished with 10 runs compared to seven for American in game one, but American was awarded the win on forfeit after a substitution infraction on the part of Halifax National.

National scored one run in the first, three in the second, five in the third and one in the fourth, while American scored four runs in the fourth and three in the sixth inning.

Amanda Coleman had a triple and two base hits for National, while Puryear and Wilson added hits.

Dawson had two hits for American, while Walker, Haley Saunders, Chandler, Balducci, McCormick, and Hailey Hudson had base hits for American.

National pitchers Thompson and Auld struck out two batters, and American pitchers Saunders and Jillian Walker struck out one National batter during the game.

Halifax National was awarded the Sportsmanship Award for the Ponytails District 7 X-Play Tournament following the game.
