National Angels edge American 2-1 in opener

Halifax National edged American 2-1 in the best-of-three X-Play tournament opener on Saturday, scoring one run each in the third and fourth innings, while American scored its run in the bottom of the fourth.

National took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a walk to Claudia Marable, double by Chloe Loftis and walks to Hailey Marable and Kayla Spencer.

National added a run in the fourth inning when Autumn Younger drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a pair of passed balls before Gracie Wagstaff drew a walk and Claudia Marable singled.

Down 2-0 entering the bottom of the fourth, American rallied after a leadoff single by Bailey Bowen and a walk to Skyla Strohm, with Bowen eventually scoring to make it a 2-1 game.

Neither team could mount a scoring threat in the fifth and final inning.

Wagstaff went the distance for National, allowing one hit while striking out seven batters and walking three in five innings.

Abby Martin and Raegan Ridgeway pitched three and two innings for American, Martin allowing one hit while striking out two batters and walking three.

Ridgeway allowed one hit while striking out four and walking three in two innings of work.
