Post 8 faces Big Island in district opener

With rain and a scheduling conflict having postponed its first two attempts to start District 9 play, the South Boston American Legion Post 8 Junior Legion baseball team will try again tonight to get the district portion of its schedule underway.

Post 8 will face Big Island Post 217 tonight at 7 p.m. at Halifax County High School in a game Post 8 Head Coach Jody Nelson is calling a key contest.

“If we can win this game, it will put us in prime position in the district,” Nelson said.

“Big Island has a solid ballclub every year. They’re well-coached and they have good talent. If we can win Monday, it puts us in a real good spot going into the rest of the week.”

This is a busy week for Post 8, which has five games scheduled for this week.

On Tuesday, Post 8 will travel to Morehead High School in Eden. N.C. to face the Tri-Cities Rivercats in a non-league contest. Post 8, which enters the week 1-1 on the season, scored its season-opening win over the Rivercats here at Halifax County High School.

There will be no rest for Post 8 as it will travel to Market Garden Field in Danville Wednesday night to face the Danville Post 325 Senior Legion team in another non-league game. The two teams battled each other hard last week before Danville Post 325 escaped with a 14-12 win in eight innings at Halifax County High School.

Post 8 will get three days of rest before facing Montgomery County Post 59 in a doubleheader set for a 2 p.m. start on Sunday at Halifax County High School. Both games of the doubleheader will be district games.
