Three Gridders Are First Team Picks

Three members of the Halifax County High School varsity football team, Markee Brooks, Lemal Adams and Shaquan Bailey, have been named to the First Team of the All-Western Valley District Football team. They are among 15 Comets players that earned all-district honors.

Brooks was also named to the Second Team as a wide receiver, joining teammates Thomas Logan and Darrius Bethel who also were cited as Second Team picks.

Brooks, a senior, was named to the First Team as a kick returner. He returned 11 kickoffs for a total of 386 yards, giving him an average of just over 35 yards per return. His longest return was 85 yards.

In addition, Brooks returned two punts for a total of 46 yards, giving him an average of 23 yards per return.

Adams, a senior, was named to the First Team as a wide receiver. Adams had 58 catches totaling 680 yards and scored five touchdowns. He averaged 11.72 yards per catch. His longest catch was 48 yards.

Bailey, also a senior, was named to the First Team as a defensive back. The Comets senior logged 51 tackles and had 41 assists. Those numbers gave him an average of 10.2 tackles per game.

Only those players that earn First Team picks are eligible for All-Northwest Region Team honors.

In being named to the Second Team as a wide receiver, Brooks caught 23 passes for a total of 365 yards. He scored four touchdowns.

Logan was named as Second Team pick as a running back. Logan ran for 360 yards on 108 carries. He also caught 34 passes for a total of 228 yards and scored two touchdowns.

Bethel, a junior, was one of the stalwarts for the Comets on the offensive line. Playing at one of the guard spots, Bethel was cited as being one of the top blockers.
In addition to the five previously mentioned players, nine other Comets players received Honorable Mention accolades.

Among them was Brooks, who earned a third all-district honor in being cited as a pick as a defensive back. Brooks logged 19 tackles and 20 assists as a defensive back.

Also among the Honorable Mention picks were junior center Trey Reese and junior linebackers Tywaun Boyd and Deandre Crowder. Boyd was credited with 40 tackles and 34 assists.

Kendell Adams, a junior, received Honorable Mention accolades as both as wide receiver and a linebacker. As a receiver, Adams had 23 catches for 289 yards and three touchdowns. His average was almost 29 yards per catch.

In his position on defense as a linebacker, Adams logged 20 tackles and 28 assists.

Senior quarterback Dale Trent received Honorable Mention accolades. He averaged 219.1 yards passing per game. His passing record for the season was 207-377-11.
Punter Dru Henderson was another Comets player to earn Honorable Mention recognition. Henderson, a senior, averaged 36.65 yards per punt.

Junior defensive lineman Terrance Brandon earned Honorable Mention recognition. He logged 24 tackles and 29 assists.


Quinton Polk, a junior defensive lineman who had 14 tackles and 14 assists, earned Honorable Mention accolades as did senior defensive lineman Dante Hamlett.

Hamlett recorded 28 tackles and 30 assists.
