Halifax County resident Grant Nichols recently won the Virginia State Championship in an AMA sanctioned Motorcross event at Virginia Motorsports Park in Petersburg.

Nichols won the state title in the 50cc class and followed that up with a third-place finish in the 65cc class.

Nichols, who rides a 50cc COBRA racing dirtbike and a 65cc KTM racing dirtbike when competing, got his first dirtbike at age four, complete with training wheels.

Now nine-years-old, Nichols started racing at age five and races in AMA District 13 Series and the AMA Grand Championship Series.

He is currently first in points in both the 50cc and 65cc classes in the Grand Championship Series, and stands second in points in the 50cc class and fourth in points in the 65cc class in the District 13 Series.

Nichols races every weekend in venues from Virginia to Maryland and Georgia, and lists his favorite riders as Chad Reed, Ryan Dungey and Ricky Carmichael.

The son of Darrell and Dana Nichols of Halifax, Grant’s goal is to qualify for Loretta Lynn’s Amateur National Motocross Championship, and lists sister Paige as his biggest fan.
