Former Halifax County High School star pitcher Jeremy Jeffress has made the Toronto Blues Jays’ Opening Day roster.
According to team and Major League Baseball reports, Jeffress and fellow relief pitcher Brett Cecil were informed Wednesday they will be on the Major League team’s 25-man roster when the Major League Baseball season opens this week.
Published reports stated that the two relief pitchers entered spring training camp competing for a spot in the Blue Jays’ bullpen, but the Blue Jays kept both pitchers after it was learned that third baseman Brett Lawrie will have to start the season on the disabled list.
According to published reports, the competition between Jeffress and Cecil will continue as the Blue Jays are expected to carry only seven relief pitchers after Lawrie returns.
Reports stated that if the Blue Jays elect to carry only seven relief pitchers, it is likely that either Jeffress or Cecil will be cut from the team. The reports stated both pitchers are currently out of options on their contract and cannot be sent to the Minor Leagues without clearing waivers.
