YMCA swim team qualifies six for regional meet

Six members of the South Boston-Halifax County YMCA Sea Serpents swim team have qualified for the Upper Southeast Regional Short Course Championship Swim Meet to be held March 15-17 at the Rock Hill Area YMCA in Rock Hill, S.C.
Karson Evans (four events), Shea Carey (eight events), Nick Carey (four events), Kaitlynn Evans (three events), Andrew Abbott (five events) and Noah Stevens (four events) qualified for the regional meet on the basis of their results in the PYSA Swimming Championships held March 1-3 in Bedford.
The South Boston-Halifax County YMCA Sea Serpents swim team finished fourth in the nine-team field in the PYSA Swimming Championships, scoring a total of 576 points. The boys tallied 458 points while the girls added 118 points.
The YMCA of Roanoke Valley won the meet with 4,017.50 points.
Three members of the Sea Serpents team won their individual races. Andrew Parikh won the 25-yd. freestyle in the 6 & under age group with a time of 22.38 seconds. Abbott won the 100-yard breaststroke race in the 13-14 age group with a time of 1:16.92. Stevens won the 50-yd. freestyle race in the 13-14 age group with a time of 25.44 seconds.
The Sea Serpents’ boys 14 & under medley relay team set a new PYSA record. Competing in the event were Abbott (backstroke), Michael Neller (breaststroke), Nick Carey (butterfly) and Stevens (freestyle).
Parikh won high-point honors for the meet in the boys 6 & under age group.
A handful of Sea Serpents team members concluded their seasons with time improvements. The biggest time improvement came from Joe Smiley in the 11-12-year-old age group, who dropped a total of 29.97 seconds in the 500-yd. freestyle.
Parikh (6 & under) recorded a 20.43 –second drop in the 50-yd. backstroke. Shea Carey (10 & under) posted a 27.29-second improvement in the 200-yd. IM. Elizabeth McCurty (11-12-year-old age group) had a 19.48-second improvement in the 100-yd. freestyle.
Neller posted a 19.52-second drop in his time in the 200-yd. freestyle and Kahlil Richardson logged a 16.11-second drop in the 50-yd. freestyle.
