South Boston to host state games

The South Boston Dixie Youth Baseball League has been awarded two state baseball tournaments for 2014.

South Boston will host the Dixie Youth Minor League (ages 8, 9 & 10) and Dixie Youth Baseball O-Zone League (ages 10, 11 & 12) state tournaments in July of 2014, making it the first time in 12 years that the league has hosted a state Dixie Youth Baseball tournament.

Harold Carmichael, the Commissioner of the South Boston Dixie Youth Baseball League, said Sunday the league made bids for the two tournaments and that Dixie Youth Baseball officials awarded the league the tournaments Saturday during a statewide meeting.

“This is a huge accomplishment,” Carmichael said.

“We feel this is a very positive thing for the community. In our mind, it says we are well on our way back.

“We’ve had some down times and some down years,” he added.

“This shows that the hard work we have been putting in these last few years and what we’re doing in working with and caring for the children that play baseball in South Boston is paying off.”

State tournament sites for this year were determined last year. Prince Edward County/Farmville will host the Dixie Youth Baseball Minor League (AAA League) and Major League state tournaments, with South Hill hosting the Dixie Youth Baseball O-Zone State Tournament. All three tournaments will start July 19.

In addition to the news of South Boston hosting the pair of Dixie Youth Baseball state tournaments a year from now, officials of the South Boston Dixie Majors Baseball League officials say it appears likely that this year’s Dixie Majors State Tournament (for players ages 17-19) will return to South Boston.

League official Mike King said yesterday that while the league has not been formally notified, it appears that South Boston will again host the Dixie Majors State Tournament this July.

King said he felt “90 percent sure” the league will be awarded the tournament, and is optimistic that a decision from state Dixie Majors Baseball officials will come within the next few days.

According to King, the South Boston league put in bids for both the Dixie Pre-Majors and Dixie Majors state tournaments. He said Powhatan expressed interest in hosting the Dixie Pre-Majors State Tournament, but no other localities expressed an interest in the Dixie Majors event.

South Boston hosted both the Dixie Pre-Majors and Dixie Majors state tournaments last year.

The Halifax County/South Boston Dixie Softball League will host district tournaments this season for the Darlings, Angels, Ponytails and Belles divisions, with play starting June 21.

Officials of the Halifax County/South Boston Dixie Boys Baseball League have made bids for this year’s Dixie Junior Boys (age 13) and Dixie Boys (ages 14 & 15) regional tournaments.

Carmichael said it will be a month or two before the league officials will know whether or not they will be awarded either or both tournaments.

As far as this year’s area Dixie Youth Baseball district tournaments go, Halifax is scheduled to host the Dixie O-Zone district tournament, Clarksville is scheduled to host the Dixie Youth Machine Pitch League tourney and this year’s Minor League (AAA League) district tournament is slated to be played in Emporia.
