Comets track team finishes 6th in Colonel Classic

The Halifax County High School girls and boys track teams placed sixth in their respective meets in last Saturday’s Colonel Classic at William Fleming High School in Roanoke.

 

Halifax County High School won one event, with Amber Walton winning the high jump for the girls team with a leap of five feet and two inches. The jump qualified Walton for the Northwest Region Meet to be held later this spring.

Mikayla Boyd also had a good day for the Comets girls team. She finished second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.51 seconds, placed third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 52.40 seconds and placed 12th in the long jump with a leap of 14-7 ½.

Tyrika Lee had a solid outing, finishing third in the 200-meter race with a time of 26.988 seconds and placing seventh in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.3 seconds.

Also for the Comets, Sydney Little finished eighth in the shot put with a toss of 29-6, and Khamishia Outlaw finished in a tie for 11th place in the discus with a throw of 72-6.

Keuna Mayo was the top finisher for the Comets in the 400-meter race with her 22nd-place effort and time of 1:10.05. Jessica Hinds was the top finisher for the Comets in the 800-meter race with her 25th-place finish in a time of 3:10.39.

The Comets girls relay teams had good performances in Saturday’s meet. Halifax County High School’s 4x100-meter relay team consisting of Boyd, Dashawna Cole, Trinity Williams and Lee, placed second with a time of 53.04 seconds.

Halifax County High School’s 4x400-meter relay team consisting of Lashawn Johnson, Anissia Coleman, Tamia Boyd and 
Taiesha Logan placed ninth with a time of 4:45.64.

In the boys meet, Marcus Bowman and Dontra Graves were the top finishers for the Comets, both earning third-place finishes in their respective events.

Bowman placed third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.49 seconds and placed third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 41.61 seconds. Graves placed third in the 100-meter dash, posting a time of 11.38 seconds.

Bryant Coleman earned a fourth-place finish in the long jump with a jump of 20-2 ¼. Juan Leon posted a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter race with a time of 52.77 seconds. Also posting a top-ten finish for the Comets was Tecquin Showers-Hogue, who placed seventh in the shot put with a throw of 40-6. He also placed 14th in the discus with a toss of 105-6.

Kelvin Jennings was the top finisher for the Comets in the triple jump. He placed 11th in the event with a jump of 38-7 ½.

Andrew Liegey was the top finisher for the Comets in both the 800-meter and 1,600 meter races. He placed 27th in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:26.32 and placed 21st in the 1,600-meter race with a time of 5:23.76.

The Comets relay teams had very good outings in the meet. Halifax County High School’s 4x100-meter relay team consisting of Bowman, Jennings, Devan Richardson and Miles Claiborne placed fourth with a time of 45.11 seconds.

Also placing fourth was the Comets 4x800-meter relay team consisting of Leon, Joseph Coleman, Sergio Velasquez and William Brooks. The team’s time for the race was 9:27.36.

The Comets 4x400-meter relay team earned a fifth-place finish with a time of 3:50.52. Leon, Graves, Bryant Coleman and Joseph Coleman were on that team.
