Slabach sprints to win in Comet 5K

Aaron Slabach wasn’t expecting a lot in Saturday’s Halifax County High School-sponsored Comet 5K race.

Slabach, who is training for a marathon to be held November 10 in Richmond, got up early Saturday morning and ran 19 miles. After that he ran the 3.1-mile 5K race.

The 16-year-old Alton resident apparently had a little something left. He took the lead from 71-year-old Richard Stolar with about a half a mile to go and edged Stolar by six seconds to win the race.

“I didn’t come here to win it,” Slabach said of the race.

“I just wanted to see how it would be to run a long distance and then run a timed race after that. The win was just a coincidence.”

Slabach toured the course that started in Tuck Dillard Stadium and wound its way along the Halifax County Middle School and Halifax County High School campuses in 20 minutes and 31.63 seconds. Stolar came in at 20:37.7.

“It was a tough race because I had already run 19 miles,” Slabach said.

“I ran a 20:31 and my best is a 17:50, so it (his time) was nothing like that. It was a pretty fast course. It was similar to the course we ran in last year’s Young Life 5K, which I won.”

Fourteen-year-old Aaron Moody finished third with a time of 21:40.51.

Erica Elliott, competing in her second 5K race of the year, won the women’s race. She came in with a time of 23:55.12, edging runner-up April Lacks by a tick over three seconds. Former Comets softball standout Stephanie Clark finished third with a time of 25:51.22.

“It was pretty easy, pretty typical,” Elliott said of the race.

“The course was good. It was all paved and no off-road stuff, so it was good.”

A total of 74 people participated in the 5K run/walk event that was held as a fund-raising event for the Halifax County High School Athletic Department.

Seven youngsters participated in the one-mile fun run held prior to the start of the 5K. Christian Worley won the Fun Run with a time of 5:44. Mackenzie Lawter placed second with a time of 5:59 and Mason Powell won third place with a time of 6:01.
