Corky Sterns has started the Professor Pigskin contest for 2012 off with a bang, winning the first week with an 11-1 slate.
Sterns missed only the Notre Dame-Navy game and correctly picked 11 others.
Jeff Nelson, another long-time prognosticator, also had an 11-1 slate, missing only the Virginia Tech-Georgia Tech game.
Both Sterns and Nelson picked E.C. Glass to defeat Halifax County in the tie-breaker, but Sterns came closest to the final score to win the $30 prize for first-place.
Nelson takes home $20 for second-place, while Dave Ashwell wins $10 for third-place.
Ashwell and six others had 10-2 slates, but Ashwell’s prediction of the final score between Glass and Halifax was the closest,
giving him third-place for the first week.
Contestants were on the ball the first week of play, with a number of them finishing with 9-3 slates and a few more with 8-4 marks.
No prognosticator had a perfect slate last week despite a number of players coming within striking distance, and the jackpot for that accomplishment is now $72.
