The Halifax National Ponytails all-stars let a 9-2 lead slip away in the late innings and dropped their opener 20-11 to South Carolina in the Dixie Softball Ponytails X-Play World Series on Saturday.
After giving up two runs off five hits to South Carolina in its first at-bat, Halifax National scored a run off a double by Sara Moser and RBI single by Morgan Nelson in the bottom of the first inning.
South Carolina went scoreless in the second despite three hits, and Halifax took the lead with five runs off six hits, including singles by Lindsey Stone and Jessica Auld, an RBI single by Kenna Moser, single by Faith Lester, RBI triple by Sara Moser and base hit by Amanda Coleman.
Halifax made it 9-2 with three runs on six hits in the third inning, starting with an inside-the-park home run by Malasia Boyd.
Nelson singled, Madison Hailey hit an RBI single and Coleman an RBI groundout in the inning.
South Carolina began its comeback in the fourth inning with two runs on five hits, and Halifax could not score in the inning despite hits by Auld and Kenna Moser.
Neither team scored in the fifth inning, but South Carolina added 15 runs off 15 hits in the sixth inning, while Halifax National managed two runs off four hits.
Hailey doubled, Tyra Murray singled, Stone hit an RBI double and Kenna Moser singled in the sixth inning for Halifax.
Amber Moore started the game on the mound for Halifax National and pitched into the sixth inning before being relieved by Nelson.
Moore struck out three batters in the game.
Halifax National played Sunday evening at 6 p.m. needing a win to stay alive in the double elimination tournament being played in Hartsville, S.C.
