Debs win another state championship

The Halifax American Debs all-stars are heading to the Dixie Softball Debs World Series after clinching the Virginia state title Tuesday night with an 11-0 win over Emporia.

Jameshia Smith slammed a two-run home run, and VeVe Brandon connected for another homer in the championship game win, while Halifax pitchers Lindsey Wilkins, Dalyn Hall, Jennifer Lacks and Meg Bane combined to hurl a two-hit shutout

Halifax American reached the championship game with a 19-0 rout of Lunenburg earlier Tuesday evening, with Courtney Epps hitting a grand slam homer. 

Epps finished 3-3 with seven RBIs in the win over Lunenburg.

Halifax American will represent Virginia in the Dixie Softball Debs World Series in Powhatan starting Aug. 3, with its first game a contest against Georgia that day at 10:45 a.m.


Halifax American 11 Emporia 0

Halifax scored three runs in the second inning, five in the third and three in the fifth inning to defeat Emporia for the state title.

Brandon was stranded after a leadoff single in the first inning, but three runs in the second inning gave Halifax the early lead, with Hall and Tayler Mosley hitting consecutive singles and Jill Trickey moving the base runners with a sacrifice bunt.

Jamilia Smith walked, Lindsey Wilkins hit a sacrifice fly and Courtney Epps walked, with Smith scoring the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.

Five runs in the third inning made it 8-0, with Brandon’s solo homer leading off the inning.  Kate Bane doubled, and Jameshia Smith followed with a two-run homer, Meg Bane reached on an error, Lacks and Hall reaches after being hit by pitches and Tayler Mosley singled.

Three runs in the fifth helped end the game under the run rule, with Jameshia Smith getting a single, Meg Bane a double and Lacks a two-run hit.

Hall hit a single and Mosley reached on an error to plate the final run of the game.

Wilkins, Hall, Lacks and Bane allowed a total of two hits while on the mound, and the foursome recorded four strikeouts.


Halifax American 19 Lunenburg 0

Epps’ grand slam helped Halifax American score six runs in the third inning, and they went on to a 19-0 win over Lunenburg.

Halifax had gotten off to a good start with seven runs in the first inning, with Brandon, Kate Bane, Jameshia Smith reaching base without benefit of a hit before Lacks walked to plate a run.

Hall smacked a two-run double, Mosley walked, Trickey hit a sacrifice fly, and Jamilia Smith and Wilkins each reached base via a fielder’s choice before Epps hit a two-run single.

Halifax scored two runs in the second on a double by Brandon, single by Kate Bane and RBI groundout by Jameshia Smith before a Lunenburg error plated the final run of the inning.

In the third inning, Mosley singled, Trickey walked and Wilkins singled ahead of Epps’ grand slam.  Jessica Velazquez singled, Brandon hit an RBI single and Kate Bane tripled before scoring on a Lunenburg error.

A single by Meg Bane, walk to Lacks and single by Hall preceded a sacrifice fly by Mosley in the fourth inning, and Jamilia Smith doubled, Epps hit an RBI double and Velazquez an RBI triple in the fifth, before Kate Bane collected an RBI by reaching base on a fielder’s choice.

Wilkins, Kate Bane, Epps and Hall combined to hold Lunenburg to only three hits while striking out a total of five batters.
