Ponytails win state championship

The Halifax National Ponytails X-Play all-stars capped an undefeated run (4-0) through the state X-Play tournament in Dinwiddie Tuesday with a comeback win over Blackstone National for the state title.

Trailing 4-0 after one inning and 5-0 after three innings, Halifax National scored six runs in the fourth inning and one in the top of the sixth to top Blackstone 7-5.

Four runs on two doubles and four singles gave Blackstone a four-run lead after one inning, and it added another run in the third off two base hits to lead 5-0 before Halifax National rallied in the fourth.

Held to three base runners in the first three innings, Faith Lester on a single and Amber Moore on a walk in the first, and Amanda Coleman after a double in the third, Halifax National scored six runs on seven hits in the fourth on singles by Kenna Moser, Lester, Moore (two RBI), Malasia Boyd, Morgan Nelson (RBI), Madison Hailey (RBI), and a two-run double by Coleman.

Ruby Hatcher and Tyra Murray drew walks in the inning that gave Halifax National a 6-5 lead, and Halifax added another run in the top of the top of the sixth off a single by Boyd and RBI double by Madison Hailey.

Blackstone had only one base runner in its last at-bat, with the side retired in order after a leadoff walk.

Nelson pitched the first five innings for Halifax National in the championship game, and Moore came on for the final inning, with Nelson recording seven strikeouts and Moore one.

Halifax National travels to Hartselle, S.C. for the Dixie Softball Ponytails X-Play World Series, with its opener July 28 against South Carolina.
